* Sawtelle Japantown Celebration
February 25, 2025 marks the 10th anniversary of Los Angeles City’s official recognition of Sawtelle Japantown. In 2015, the West Los Angeles community petitioned to rename the area Sawtelle Japantown—to join Little Tokyo, San Francisco and San Jose as one of four remaining Japantowns in the United States. Sawtelle Japantown Celebration (SJC) was established in 2018 to remember and appreciate the history and legacy of a longstanding ethnic minority community.
The annual not-for-profit grassroots Sawtelle Japantown Celebration (SJC) continues to grow and celebrate communities—from Sawtelle, Little Tokyo, Santa Monica, Westwood, Rancho Park-Cheviot Hills, Mar Vista, Culver City, Del Rey, Larchmont, Downtown LA, East Los Angeles, San Gabriel, Torrance and Gardena.

MARDI GRAS ONDO PARTY in LITTLE TOKYO / DTLA - COMMUNITY EVENT - ALL WELCOME TO ATTEND.
All are welcome to attend Angel Nishinaka’s Celebration of Life which will be held at Centenary United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 8, 2025 at 2:30pm. Centenary is located at 300 S. Central Avenue in Downtown Los Angeles (Little Tokyo / Skidrow-kyo). Please feel free to share this invite with others. The planned program will include Taiko, Ondo Dancing, singing, etc. a spectacle designed to keep everyone entertained and in great spirits.
Angel’s wish was to have a Mardi Gras-themed Celebration of Life in which no one wore formal black funeral attire, but rather the Mardi Gras colors of purple, green, or gold. The family has since added “Angel red” and Japanese hapi coats. Or just come in anything you feel comfortable, it’s going to be a PARTY not a funeral… This is a COMMUNITY EVENT and everyone is invited to share in SPIRIT CULTURE COMMUNITY as we celebrate the life of Angel Nishinaka, the “matriarch” of the Nishinaka / Itomura family…
A CHANCE TO DANCE… We are having a “Mardi Gras ONDO” !!!! The Mardi Gras Party following the service will include singing, dancing, and performances, a true COMMUNITY EVENT that all are welcome to JOIN and PARTICIPATE. A Skidrow-kyo / Little Tokyo Dance Club Mardi Gras Ondo complete with Ondo dancing, Taiko performances, open Mic Karaoke, etc. Join us on the dance floor or enjoy the festivities from afar (guaranteed spectacle to watch.) Please feel free to invite others, this is a COMMUNITY EVENT and ALL are WELCOME to attend.. Please help US in fulfilling one of our Matriarch’s final wishes, a PARTY where EVERYONE shares in SPIRIT CULTURE COMMUNITY… Needless to say, our send-off for our mom, grandma, and great-grandma will be as unique as she was…
-The Nishinaka Family
PS. Additional information will be posted at www.skidrowkyo.org and www.LTdanceclub.org in regards to this event. A public Ondo dance practice will be held at Centenary UMC located at 300 S. Central Ave DTLA 90013 on Sunday March 2, 2025 4pm to 6:00pm. Thank you. And please share with family and friends.
This was Angel's favorite ondo to watch. This dance will be part of the program and one of the many ondos to be danced during the Mardi Gras Party... YouTube video by David Osako (Angel always enjoyed conversing with David) of the Meiji Dance Club practicing Asadoya Yunta with the OAA...
Sukiyaki Ondo will be part of the program and one of the many ondos to be danced during the Mardi Gras Party. YouTube video of Long Beach Ondo / Terminal Islanders demonstrating the ondo to the Little Tokyo Dance Club...
"Big City Girl's Ondo" by Rayko of Lolita Dark will be danced during the Mardi Gras Party. The ondo was choreographed by Erica Olsen and Kaoru Enjoji . This video produced by the LTDC was filmed after "making" a few changes to the "draft" dance becoming the final version of the dance. Angel is pictured in the video (seated) and voiced her "two cents" in the final version...

On Thursday November 21,, 2024 from 6 pm to 8pm (setup at 5pm.) The Little Tokyo Business Association will host the Worthy Of Love Organization and 300+ Unhoused Children and their families for a cultural exchange and a Birthday Celebration for children born in the month of November. Volunteers representing the Skidrow-kyo Mission and / or Little Tokyo Dance Club are asked to be at the event by 5:00 pm. Volunteer's roles are basically to interact with guest during activities such as the "ondo demonstration." Videos of previous Worthy Of Love events are posted on this website.
The Terasaki Budokan does have limited underground "pay" parking. Enter on S. Los Angeles St. Food will be served to GUEST, volunteers will have access to any food left over. The possibility of food run out is probable so Volunteers should plan accordingly and eat before the event... There is a 7/11 across the street from the venue. Volunteers that have never visited the Terasaki Budokan may be asked to electronically (on a tablet) complete a facility "acknowledgement" document before entering the premises. This document only needs to be done once, if done in the past just let the administrator know acknowledgement has been completed during a previous visit to the Budokan.
The kids love to dance and this is their favorite part of the event, the "hip hop dance off.". Volunteers are encouraged to join in the dancing. WE ARE ALWAYS IN SEARCH OF VOLUNTEERS THAT LOVE TO DANCE TO "HIP HOP", etc... And willing to share your talents with a great group of kids.
